Do Museums Care: Conversations with Museum De-Tox

About this event

Institutions, including museums and art galleries, are releasing statements in solidarity with BLM. These accounts are also taking on artistic forms in public space. Museum De-tox are trying to make changes which take us beyond performative gestures, so that institutions start becoming accountable for their accounts. In this conversation the speakers will discuss the institutional tracking, tracing and mapping work Museum De-tox are labouring over behind the scenes.

Conversation with:

Thanh Sinden Chairs Museum Detox’s Executive Committee, championing better representation, fair conditions and inclusion of PoC/BAME cultural, intellectual and creative contributions. Museum Detox challenge and work to deconstruct systems of inequality that exists in the cultural sector. She has worked with the Museum Association, AMA, Tate, What Next? Movement, the British Council and many community organisations and activists networks, to foster the conditions where inclusion and collaboration are embedded.

Nick Virk is a Producer, working on film and other digital media at Tate. They are the lead on social media for Museum Detox and a trustee for Mosaic LGBT Youth Centre. Their speciality is in Hindi cinema.

Cina Aissa is a multidisciplinary artist-educator who lives and works in London. She is passionate about inclusion and is an activist in the fields of mental health, race equality and workers rights. She is a member of Museum Detox and campaigns for better conditions and real opportunities for POC workers in the cultural sector.

Dr Nirmal Puwar is a Reader at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is author of 'Space Invaders: race, gender and bodies out of place' and Co-convenor of MA Gender, Media, Culture. Recently she has been collaborating with feminists in the museum sector https://mspaceinvaders.com/space-invaders-manifesto-for-change/ through the international project https://www.globalgrace.net/spaceinvading with the Post-doctoral researchers Siobhan McGuirk and Catherine Hahn.
